MEXICO CITY - Our September forum brought together a diverse group of the newly-formed Red Mexicana de Ecoturismo at the Xochicalco Artisans Market/Cafe in the Centro Historico of Mexico City. We discussed the topics of improving communications and training. Hector Ceballos handed out brochures promoting the upcoming ecotourism conference in Australia, and suggested that Mexico adopt a national, inter-sectoral council to promote ecotourism. The discussion also included profiles of projects in Mexico City, Colima and Acapulco. I will write this synopsis in my native language - English - though presentations were made in Spanish.
One of the key observations made at this forum was that "there can be no improvement in communications about ecotourism if there's not information." Mexico lacks adequate tourism centers and the ones that exist are poorly equipped to provide contacts for ecotourism.
It seems very strange that better-funded international tourism conferences don't provide timely web coverage, so the idea of this under-construction document -- as is the Planeta website -- is to create a bridge between the Online and Offline worlds focusing on ecotourism.
I asked participants of the Red Mexicana de Ecoturismo to email a short introduction or comments about their work. These messages will be added to this page over the next few days.

Nuevamente te felicito por tu iniciativa de hacer la reunion del martes pasado.
Sugiero que nuestro grupo se llame Red Mexicana de Ecoturismo. Quiza nuestro grupo sea la semilla para lo que en el futuro pudiera ser el Consejo Nacional de Ecoturismo, el cual debera ser un grupo mixto, intersectorial, con representantes del gobierno, sector privado, ONGs, comunidades locales, universidades, etc., que tenga una gran autoridad moral y que lleve a cabo actividades concretas y practicas, de beneficio para cada uno de los sectores involucrados. Para que este Consejo funcione de manera adecuada y dinamica, debera de tener un Secretariado Tecnico, constituido por personal de alta calificacion tecnica (de tiempo completo), cuyos sueldos sean pagados por aportaciones de los diversos sectores.
En virtud de que salgo ma=F1ana de viaje a Australia, no te puedo enviar comentarios mas amplios.
Te buscara pronto Federico Llamas, quien regresa a Mexico despues de hacer estudios de maestria en Australia y desea incorporarse a la Red. Saludos!
