Rough notes from the Red Mexicana de Ecoturismo

MEXICO CITY - Our third meeting brought a dozen participants to discuss new ecotourism projects and developments in Mexico as well as regulations, standards and certification.

I asked participants of the Red Mexicana de Ecoturismo to email a short introduction or comments about their work. These messages will be added to this page over the next few days.

Novedades/What's new?

Juan Pablo Rico unveiled the plans for the "Eco Hostal Moneda" which will be a combination youth hostal/ tourism office/environmental showcase in the Centro Historico. The hostal, located east of the Zocalo at Moneda 8, should open in January 2000. Web: http://www.hostels.com.mx

Robert Cudney of the National Ecology Institute (INE) discussed recent events coordinated by SECTUR and SEMARNAP to develop sustainable tourism in Mexico.

Fernanda Aldana announced the dates for the second Expo Aventura y Ecoturismo at Mexico City's World Trade Center. The event will take place from June 29-July 1. A press conference is scheduled for January 13, 2000 at 8:30 in the Salon Peten at the World Trade Center.

Jorge Chavez submitted the following info: The environmental department (PUMA) within Mexico's Autonomous National University (UNAM) will host a two-week conference on ecotourism (Ecoturismo: Turismo Ambientalmente Planificado) May 22-June 2 2000 and in August 2000. En Mexico desde hace algunos años se ha procurado formular una normativa en relaciÑn a la practica de actividades tur'sticas en àreas naturales, las cuales se sintetizan en las Normas Oficiales Mexicanas, como ejemplos tenemos las siguientes:

Sobre estas, qu³ tanto seguimiento se les ha dado?, realmente se aplican?, Ëqui³nes son los organismos o instituciones de verificaciÑn?. Estas son algunas interrogantes que surgen cuando se discute este tema. Propuestas:

 

Announcement / Invitation

Planeta.com will host an informal workshop/round-table discussion for ecotourism professionals - travel agents, researchers, journalists, environmentalists, etc. Our focus will be Mexican ecotourism and this workshop will allow everyone to network with other people who live in Mexico.

Date: Thursday, November 11, 1999 - between 12-5pm
Special Topic: Tourism Standards -- Normatividad
Agenda:12-2pm: New ecotourism projects and developments in Mexico; 2pm-3:30pm: Discussion about "Normatividad"; 3:30pm-5pm: Late lunch at Xochicalco Cafe

Cost: No cost, but lunch is available for 45 pesos

Requirements -- Please bring at least 50 business cards and copies of your current work or projects in ecotourism to share with all participants.
