FYI -- This document is part of our popular Web Seminar. As such, it is always a work in progress and we welcome helpful editorial suggestions. If Planeta.com can assist you, please consider making a financial donation or organizing a webinar.

MAKING CONTACT -- Email sent to Planeta may be published. If you don't want that to happen, just let us know. Requests for anonymity will be honored. (Email Tips)

Our Tips for Journalists and Publishers Guide is divided in two parts. This section shows journalists and publishers how to make the most of our site. The second section reviews RSS, how to get your news onto Google and other tips for smooth in-house operation.

PLANETA

Planeta.com strives to be reader- AND author-friendly. Check out our Vision Statement for the inside scoop. Also of interest for media pros, consult the MTW guides for authors and publishers

PLANETA FORUM

Journalists and publishers are invited to use the Planeta Forum to post questions and URLs for published articles. Share lessons learned! Here are the guidelines.

FORUM FYI

If your magazine, newspaper or website has similar interests to Planeta, you are invited to create reciprocal links. We can also create a topic within the Planeta Forum in which you can post links to select articles or the table of contents (TOC). Examples include EcoAméricas.

Not sure where to post on the forum?

Start with the least complicated. Ask if we can create a topic and you can post an index of what news your are publishing. Keep messages brief and make sure they link to working URLs.

LATIN AMERICA SPOTLIGHT

As part of our effort to illuminate what's going on in Latin America, Planeta has joined forces with other independent websites. For details, check out the Latin America Media Project (LAMP).

THINGS FOR JOURNALISTS TO KEEP IN MIND

Find out where readership comes from -- is it local, national, international or a mix?

Check whether your newspaper or magazine is featured on this site.

TIP - Participate in the Planeta Forum! Point out good stories you'd recommend to readers. And if you have written something yourself, you can mention the feature and provide the link.

IF YOU HAVE A WEBSITE

We can establish a reciprocal link from Planeta.com to your author website. Reciprocity rules!

Show the cover of your book, newspaper, magazine online.
Example: Sports Illustrated

Explain to readers how they can purchase the magazine/newspaper.

Include a calendar of upcoming speaking events.

Include links to professional associations of which you are a member.

Investigate whether your articles are picked up by Google News, Moreover or Topix.

Prepare graphics -- banners and logos -- that can be used online. If you don't have those skills, ask a talented graphics design artist friend to help you. The most common size for a banner is 468x60.

Participate in relevant online forums. If you participate on the Planeta Forum, please consult with Ron Mader to review the forum guidelines. Hopefully, you are doing this already as part of the Web Seminar!

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A WEBSITE

Create a website or blog!

EXERCISE

Conduct a google search for your name and which features come up. Check and see if adequate or too much contact information is given. This is a good exercise for journalists and publishers alike.

Curiously, many newspapers and magazines having established a website, are not clear how to what to do with it. Red flags are sites with 'news' which is more than six months old.
