CUSTOMIZING GOOGLE FOR NEWSHOUNDS

Planeta.com features are Newgoogled. What does that mean?

Google News is one of the most popular ways to check out current headlines from several thousand sources. It can be a one-stop source for news about a particular place -- Oaxaca -- or a niche topic -- ecotourism -- or something of personal interest, say rugby.

On top of my wishlist ... choosing news by filtering out popstar gossip and the tragedy of the week.

Readers can even set up news alerts (also available en español -- alertas de noticias) to inform you when new articles appear online. Also, you can customize news.

That said, Google does not include all the news sources it could. For example, we would love to see indexed Honduras This Week and Transitions Abroad.

GUIDELINES

One of the most useful ways publishers can use the Web is by educating writers beforehand about materials that will and will not be considered for publication. Provide guidelines for contributors.

FEEDBACK

How do you encourage participation from your clients? Do you publish reader comments? Do you provide a bulletin board for discussion or to generate story ideas?

MEDIA, ENVIRONMENT AND TOURISM

During the Media, Environment and Tourism Conference there was much discussion about how authors and publishers need to coordinate their work.

PUBLISHERS

When receiving articles or photos from reporters on assignment, send a short 'message received' reply.

Pay for articles and photos in a timely manner.

WANNABE AUTHORS

Looking for someone to publish your book? Consult our index of publishers or try your hand at electronic publication.

A FEW WORDS ABOUT COPYRIGHT

For background on copyright issues, consult Writing-World.com's essay.

Worried about plagiarism? Use Copyscape to locate copies of your content elsewhere on the Web. You should also conduct a search for your name (ego-surfing!) via Find Articles
