MAKING CONTACT -- Email messages sent to Planeta may be published. If you don't want that to happen, just let us know. Requests for anonymity will be honored. (Email Tips)

Explore one of the most popular sites on the Web -- Yahoo!

YAHOO Q&A

WHAT IS YOUR TOP TIP? - When you register on Yahoo, write down your ID and password.

DIRECTORY

b Yahoo Directory - http://www.yahoo.com

Yahoo's home page epitomizes what's great about the Web -- it works! This is one of the first global directories. Readers can find great links in an orderly fashion and webmasters can submit their sites for free or for a fee.

www.flickr.com

Yahoo has numerous global portals that provide links not found on its standard US page. Regional indices focus on Mexico, the UK and Ireland and Australia and New Zealand, among others. For many internet users, Yahoo's index is an excellent starting place to search for information on the Web.

YAHOO! 360°

b Yahoo! 360° - http://360.yahoo.com
Keep an eye on this service.

AUDIO SEARCH

b Audio Search - http://audio.search.yahoo.com
Find any audio file on the Web.

EMOTICONS

b Emoticontest - Yahoo
b The Spark
b Yahoo Submit A Site

MAPS

b Yahoo Maps - http://maps.yahoo.com
Provides maps for locations in the United States and Canada

NEWS

b Yahoo News - http://dailynews.yahoo.com

News coverage is another of Yahoo's strong points. Search a limited number of news feeds by either story, photo or full coverage. One of my personal bookmarks is simply asking Yahoo to search for news photos. Click here to see an example of today's feed about Mexico that could include anything from soccer to weather maps to rural politics.

REGISTRATION

Registering online Yahoo may be confusing. Be patient! Registration is fairly simple, and there is always a "second option" of creating a new account if you have any problems with passwords or clearances.

Step-by-step instructions:

1) Go to http://groups.yahoo.com
or for help in Spanish (ayuda en español) -- http://mx.groups.yahoo.com

2) If Yahoo recognizes you, but can't locate your groups, you should be aware of the Membership Wizard which may help.

3) If you are already subscribed to some of the groups, registered in the past but cannot remember your password, select "Registered users Sign in!"

4) The new page requests that you enter your email address and eGroups password -- or if you don't recall, just the email. Be sure to use the email address which is already subscribed in to a forum

5) The new page informs you that Yahoo has sent the AUTHORIZATION CODE to your email. When you check your email, copy that code and now you can log into Yahoo Groups!

6) Once you enter the Code, the new page asks if you have a Yahoo ID. If not, it's time to create one. This process takes about 5 minutes. Here is what you are asked to do:

Select a login name and password. The sign-up form asks you for your birthday, alternate email, language preference (this is important!) zip code, gender, occupation and industry. Be as honest as you'd like. The sign-up form also assumes that you will want Yahoo Groups to send you advertising. The final question in the form allows you to turn off that option for receiving "special offers, promotions and Yahoo! features."

Among the most frequent problems, Yahoo provides answers to the following questions:

What if I forgot my password and/or Yahoo! ID?
Why doesn't my password work?
Can I change my Yahoo! ID?
How do I change my alternate email address?
How do I change my password?

EMAIL

b Yahoo Email - http://www.yahoo.com/r/m1
b Email Help - http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/edit/index.html

Yahoo offers free email. Unfortunately, when one creates an account it automatically opens a floodgate to junk mail. Yahoo kindly filters some of these messages to a folder labeled "bulk mail" but it seems less than polite that junk mail should be welcomed to begin with.

MESSENGER (CHATS)

b Yahoo Messenger - http://pager.yahoo.com
b Messenger Help - http://help.yahoo.com/help/mesg/index.html
b Messenger Help (Mac Focus) - http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mesg/macmesg/index.html

Messenger is one of Yahoo's highlights. This offers one-to-one chats with a reliable software that's easy to use.

Where do I report abuse and harassment?

YAHOO GROUPS

b Yahoo Groups - http://groups.yahoo.com
b Groups Help - http://help.yahoo.com/help/groups
b Start a Group http://groups.yahoo.com/start

b Spamguard - Yahoo Groups

Yahoo bought E-Groups a few years ago. The best thing about these groups or forums is that the software is simple to use, free (!) and it provides instant archives. Among the drawbacks -- commercial ads and even worse, a growing tendency to find spam in these groups.

More general tips about forums are reviewed in the section about online participation.

TIP -- One of the advantages of Yahoo Groups is that you can simply send the email LISTNAME-subscribe@yahoogroups.com to register or conversely LISTNAME-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com to leave a group.

TOO MUCH MAIL?

Receiving too many individual emails? Select the Daily Digest or "Read on the Web" options. In any group home page, you'll find "MEMBERSHIP" in the top, far right column. Click "Edit my Membership" to change your settings.

ATTENTION HOTMAIL USERS

Hotmail users may need to adjust an option in their email program to allow posts from Yahoo groups. Try this:

1) Open your Hotmail email
2) Select "OPTIONS"
3) Click "Mailing Lists" and "Safe List" and add the name of the mail list -- example:
"planeta@yahoogroups.com"

CREATING YOUR OWN GROUP

Want to create a group of your own? One suggestion: review the "start a group" page (http://groups.yahoo.com/start), but don't actually create a group until you've spent an hour reviewing the help section.

MODERATORS

Yahoo Group Moderators have extended privileges:

Approve or delete messages
Change membership settings
Invite or add members
Remove or ban members

PENDING MESSAGES

When a new member sends a message to the forum, the post is not automatically cleared for distribution. As the moderator, you will see on the forum home page that there is a message pending. It's best if you are informed of this via email. Please double check your settings by 1) visiting the forum's home page and selecting "Edit My Membership." Now click the box next to "Notify me when there are pending messages/subscriptions which require approval."

APPROVING AND REJECTING MESSAGES

The decision to approve or reject a message takes about 10-30 seconds.

If it's outright spam (Buy Real Estate in Dallas; Free Sex; Don't Bogart that Joint), it's a no-brainer delete. If the post is off-topic or unclear, click the button that rejects the message *and* sends the sender a message to explain why the post was not approved.

EDITING POSTS

The moderator has the ability to edit posts. We did this a lot in Planeta's groups on Yahoo. For example, we'd include the "http://" in the URL so that the link is active in the archives.
