Internet radio has been around since the late 90s, but the development of new technologies in the naughts (00s) has broadened opportunities for production and distribution.

Keep an eye on satellite radio and innovative podcasting.

STATUS REPORT

Good news. Downloading is letting people become more eclectic in their tastes. It could even lead to loosening up traditional broadcast radio.

That said, the challenge with Internet radio is that the technologies have been changing so fast that it's a challenge to keep up with the options and demands of online radio.

For example, I can use ITunes to listen to a friend's AAA Rockshow broadcasts, but I cannot use this software to listen to BBC Radio.

PODCASTING

Podcasting providers listeners with a way to 'subscribe' to radio programs and have them delivered to your personal computer. Files can automatically be downloaded.

What's new? Anyone can play the role of a broadcaster. The general rule of scarcity does not have the same impact as it does with traditional radio.
