FYI -- This document is part of our popular Web Seminar. As such, it is always a work in progress and we welcome helpful editorial suggestions. If Planeta.com can assist you, please consider making a financial donation or organizing a webinar.

It is easier than ever to create an online survey. Planeta.com has been using this technology for years to get valuable reader feed-back, whether it's on the topic of what stories readers would like or selecting the best book of the year or best government ecotourism website.

Making an effective survey requires a clear idea of what you want to learn. We recommend that surveys are created first as a betatest so that colleagues have an opportunity to suggest edits before the survey goes live.

The number one mistake we have seen is the lack of follow-up. Respondents are satisifed with contributing their time to a survey if they see that it has some impact. Alert respondents when they should expect to see a summary published. When possible, post preliminary results.

CREATING A SURVEY

Regardless of the software you use to create the survey, test it out with colleagues ahead of time. This is called a betatest.

Within the survey let participants know when and where they will be able to access the results.

If you are seeking a single response, consider including 'other' as an option so that respondents do not feel they have to choose an answer that does not suit their needs.

PROMOTING A SURVEY

If you have a survey you would like to announce via Planeta.com, we might be able to develop this via the Planeta Wikispace and we can announce this via the relevant topic on the forum. Where to post? How to proceed? Just ask. If posting is new to you, consult the guidelines. The only thing we require is that after the survey is announced, report what you learned.

SPOTLIGHT ON SURVEY MONKEY

Survey Monkey is a popular site that allowers to create online surveys. This is a free service for up to 100 responses. The pay version is $20/month and allows for logos.

FYI -- If you have a pro account, you can set it up so that when one concludes the survey, the page redirects back to your site. This option is under your admin panel, under 'options'

PUBLIC OR PRIVATE

Some institutions, such as National Geographic Traveler, conduct surveys without public announcements. In the case of Traveler, they explain they cannot evaluate a large number of self-nominations.

Our view is that private panels are fine if there is some type of prior public anouncement. If we want to improve the caliber of panels, it's time to engage tourism stakeholders and expand the rolodex.
