“We are originally from the state of Oaxaca and belong to the Chinanteco ethnic group. On March 30, 1976 we left the Ojo de Agua municipality of Tuxtepec, Oaxaca. On April 11 of the same year we arrived at a town called Tlatizapan, today Zamora Pico de Oro, being until 1980 we officially formed the Agrarian Reform ejido with 40 families. Since the foundation of the ejido, we plan our activities and look for options to improve our economy. From 1981 we worked with corn, beans, cocoa projects among other crops but without success, being until 1985 when we started to work chili and it is currently a very important crop for our ejido. In 1989 we started with some environmental education programs and this served to seek development for our community and the conservation of natural resources. In 1911 the project for the conservation of the Scarlet Macaw began, supported by the National Indigenous Institute (INI), laying 30 artificial nests. In 1996, the Ara Macao cooperative society was formed with 16 members, managing infrastructure resources with SECTUR. In this same year, the construction of the first cabins was achieved. In this way, our cooperative working group, now made up of 20 members, men and women, have worked hard for the conservation of species and the ecosystem, caring for the scarlet macaw and sharing our experience with the visitor.”
