The price of power – With Australian electricity prices amongst the highest in the world, more and more households are going solar. The big power companies say the Renewable Energy Target is pushing up prices and undermining their businesses and the federal government agrees. So who is to blame for the high price of power? Jess Hill investigates.

Power to the People – Four Corners – Stephen Long documents the revolution in power generation taking place across the globe. He travels to California, where successive governments have legislated to have one third of the state’s power come from renewable sources.

Sustainable Living – what are RECs?

The Government has set a target, for 20% of Australia’s electrical energy needs to come from renewable energy sources, by 2020. To do this they’ve set up a system of renewable energy certificates which you can trade or sell to recoup the cost of installing, but there’s another view that retaining your RECs puts more pressure on power companies to try harder to meet their green energy targets than simply buying your renewable energy ‘currency.’

A century of subsidies to oil companies is long enough. It’s time to end the taxpayer giveaways to an industry that’s rarely been more profitable, and double down on investments in an energy industry that has never been more promising.

Energy storage

Energy – In physics, energy (from Greek ἐνέργεια – energeia, “activity, operation”, from ἐνεργός – energos, “active, working” is a quantity that is often understood as the ability to perform work.

Distributed generation refers to power generation at the point of consumption. Generating power on-site, rather than centrally, eliminates the cost, complexity, interdependencies, and inefficiencies associated with transmission and distribution. 50:40

Embodied energy – The commercial energy (fossil fuels, nuclear, renewable) that was used in the work to make any product, bring it to market, and dispose of it.

Energiewende (German for Energy transition) is the transition by Germany to a sustainable economy by means of renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainable development.
