Folklore = traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of a community, passed through the generations by word of mouth

August 22 World Folklore Day (Día Internacional del Folklore) commemorates the publication on August 22, 1846 of a letter from William G. Thorns in the London magazine ‘Atheneum’ in which he first used the term ‘folklore’. The word derives from “folk” (people, people) and “lore” (knowledge, science) and is referred to as “popular knowledge.”
