Data Release #2 from Gaia

Image: #GaiaMission

Launched in 2013 to chart the sky to unprecedented accuracy, the Gaia spacecraft has obtained more than one trillion individual observations so far.

Observing each star repeatedly, Gaia can measure its parallax = the apparent motion on the sky which is really caused by Earth (or in this case the satellite) orbiting the Sun every year. Parallax can be used to estimate the distance to the stars.
