The northern part of the country is generally flat and borders the North and Baltic seas. The southern part of Germany is known for its tall mountains, called the Alps. Forests cover almost one third of Germany. The Rhine, the Danube, and the Elbe are three of the many rivers that flow through the country.
With 83 million people, Germany has the largest population of any country in the European Union. Roughly one in four people, or 26 percent of the population, has at least one parent who was born outside of Germany.
