As the capital of the state of Sonora, the city offers a variety of options for travelers. The downtown area includes a historic center (centro historico), featuring beautiful buildings, colorful plazas, and museums.

Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Cathedral was constructed from 1877 to 1908 in Neoclassic and Baroque styles.

There are guided tour of Sonora’s Government Palace, which houses artistic murals illustrating significant event in the history of the state.
