International Day for Universal Access to Information (2016)

Let us be among the first to wish you a ‘Happy IDUAI!’

September 28 is the International Day for Universal Access to Information (also known as IDUAI). Hashtags: #AccessToInfoDay , #IDUAI#RightToKnowDay

I know this doesn’t roll off the tongue, but this day in tandem with World Tourism Day has great potential. More about that below.

One of the cornerstones of Planeta.com is a commitment toward greater access to information and the physical world. Too often barriers impair our curiosity. We explored this yesterday, during World Tourism Day and a global celebration of accessible travel.

We need information – facts and fact checkers – and we need open access. What about universal access? Is there a difference?

Let’s use the example of reading about and interacting with conservation and cultural resources. Are governments providing free, public access to timely reports and publications? Do we have access to statistics? If the report is available behind a paywall, it’s difficult to be engaged.

The official event takes place today and includes philosophers, journalists, NGO workers, entrepreneurs, academics, community leaders, who are working towards the realization of SDGs, who recognize the power of communication, freedom of expression, and public access to information and ICTs in development efforts and have a creative take on how to share their experience and ideas.

IDUAI has particular relevance with the new 2030 Development Agenda, and in particular with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 16.10 which calls for ensuring public access to information and protection of fundamental freedoms.

That’s an awful lot of awful buzzwords.
