May 18 is International Museum Day, an annual celebration coordinated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). Hashtags: #IMD2017 and

Please tag, tweet and follow your favorite museums to celebrate.

Participation in International Museum Day is growing among museums all over the world. In 2016, more than 35,000 museums participated in the event in some 145 countries. Quite the impactful event!

Organised on and around May 18 each year, events and activities to celebrate International Museum Day can last a day, a weekend or an entire week.

ICOM: Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.”

The theme chosen for 2017 is “Museums and contested histories: Saying the unspeakable in museums.”

History is a vital tool for defining a given people’s identity, and each of us defines ourselves through important and fundamental historic events. Contested histories are unfortunately not isolated traumatic events. These histories, which are often little known or misunderstood, resonate universally, as they concern and affect us all.

Museum collections offer reflections of memories and representations of history. This day will therefore provide an opportunity to show how museums display and depict traumatic memories to encourage visitors to think beyond their own individual experiences.

Thanks to a partnership between ICOM and Semantika, museums now have access to a simplified, user-friendly interface they can use to share and communicate about their International Museum Day activities and events on an interactive map. Check out http://imd.museu.ms.

For 2017 International Museum Day, Planeta.com will be editing the text and links for some of our favorite museums around the world. How are museums making the most of the social web? How do we continue the conversations after the physical museum experience?

We also ask for your participation – editorial suggestions and photos and videos from your favorite museums. Show us good practices.
