In the Yir-Yoront language, Kowanyama means “The place of many waters.”

The annual (mean) rainfall of Kowanyama is about 1253mm and the most rain received in a day was 343mm. The wettest months are January (340mm) and February (360mm). From May to October there is very little rain.

Rainfall statistics have been recorded at Kowanyama since 1912 and the official Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) recoding site is the Kowanyama airport.
