Geodiversity
Geological diversity refers to the natural portion of the planet that is not alive, both at the surface and in the planet’s interior. This includes Earth’s minerals, rocks, fossils, soils, sediments, landforms, topography, and hydrological features such as rivers and lakes.
Exceptional examples of geodiversity are highlighted in UNESCO Global Geoparks around the world.
Celebrations: Geodiversity Day
UNESCO’s General Conference proclaimed October 6 as International Geodiversity Day in the recognition of the importance of geoscience in solving major challenges that face humanity. // La Conferencia General de la UNESCO proclamó el 6 de octubre como Día Internacional de la Geodiversidad en reconocimiento de la importancia de las geociencias para resolver los principales desafíos que enfrenta la humanidad. (41 C/Resolution 24).
