Forest bathing and the ‘more than human world’ – ABC Radio National – For some communities, the forest is a big part of their way of being in the world. Guests: Dr Sophie Chao is an anthropologist at the University of Sydney, and over the last ten years or so has worked with the Indigenous Marind community in Papua. Its a long way from her upbringing in ultra urban Hong Kong – and it’s changed her own sense of what it means to be living in a ‘more than human world‘. Dr Yasuhiro Kotera is Associate Professor in Mental Health at the University of Nottingham, England. He explains how the Japanese healing practice of forest bathing – known as shinrin-yoku – can lead to better mental and environmental health. He has more than 170 academic publications about mental health including a meta-analysis of forest bathing on mental health.
