Massachusetts borders Rhode Island and Connecticut to the south, New York to the west, and Vermont and New Hampshire to the north. To the east it borders the Atlantic Ocean.
The state’s name comes from the Indigenous Wôpanâak language: Mâsachsut (maa-sa-choo-sut) translating as ‘place of the foothill,’ most likely referring to the Blue Hills.
